Design testing - what can I learn with it?
Design testing - what can I learn with it?
Updated over a week ago

At Wondering, we believe that testing your assumptions is best done early in your discovery process and that is should be quick and easy. This is why we built our Show block.

This article outlines some example use cases, what types of design can be added and the participant devices supported.

What can I use this for?

Feedback on existing products

If the product you'd like to get feedback on is already live then take a screenshot of it and then add it to the Show block. There are some great, free tools out there that make taking screenshots quick and simple such as this one.

Some use cases, for when to use this are:

  • Understanding conversion rate drop off:

    • First, using analytics, identify where in your funnel the most drop off occurs.

    • Second, add that screen to a show block and get feedback on what might be leading to drop off.

  • Identify information needs:

    • When customers browse your product there will be primary information they need and some secondary, more optional, information. A show block can help you identify what these are and so optimise your user experience to improve metrics like efficiency or conversion.

    • An example insight is: when customers browse your marketplace product you learn from a show block that they primarily use the displayed product images to make their decisions. With this insight, you form the hypothesis that increasing the size of the images could increase conversion.

Feedback on new designs

When working on new concepts/ designs the sooner you can get feedback on it the better. Just export an image of your design and add it to your show block.

Some use cases, for when to use this are:

  • Feature discoverability:

    • When adding a new feature it's essential that your users can find it and want to engage with it.

    • Use a Show block to test if your new feature is easy to find - if not, then this is the best time to improve it.

  • Information comprehension:

    • The layout of your design and the copy you use is critical to success. Sadly, most of us don't have the luxury of a copywriter on our team.

    • Upload an image of your designs and use a Show block to learn how they react to your design.

What type of designs can I add?

You can add:

  1. Desktop - a mock up or screenshot of a desktop site. Any image added will be fitted to the width of the container.

  2. Mobile - a mock up or screenshot of a mobile site. Any image added will be fitted to the width of our mobile container.

  3. Other asset - this image will be displayed to scale and so allows you to add smaller elements that you'd like feedback on.

What devices are supported?

Participants must be on a desktop/ laptop to take part in a design test (although you can still test mobile designs).
