How to use AI follow-up questions

Learn what AI follow-up questions are, and how to use them in your research studies.

What are AI follow-up questions?

AI generated follow-up questions allow you to use AI to ask relevant follow-up questions to each block in your study, helping you clarify participant responses and dig further.

In each block you add to your study you will see an AI follow-up questions setting, allowing you to control the maximum number of AI generated follow-up questions that may be asked.

By default, AI-generated follow-up questions will ask clarifying questions to get more information from the participant about the answer they gave to the main question you ask in your block. If you want the follow-up questions to focus on a specific topic, you can define follow-up focus areas which guide the AI toward asking specific types of follow-up questions.

The maximum number of follow-up questions you define will not always be asked

If the AI deems that more useful information can be gathered by asking a follow-up question it will continue, but it will stop if it deems that it has gathered the necessary level of information in the questions asked so far.

How do I write follow-up focus areas?

Writing follow-up focus areas is really straightforward, just write down what you're looking to focus the conversation in on. For example:

Example focus area

Use case

Specific examples

This will guide the conversation towards collecting specific examples that are linked to your initial question.

Reasons why

Pair this with a Rate / Choose question and the follow-ups will look to understand why the participant selected that option.

Add a question of your choice

If you'd like to add a specific follow-up question then you can also do that

Top tip

Keep focus areas general (e.g. reasons why) to keep the conversation more dynamic and to better integrate context from the participant into the follow-up question.

Add specific questions for finer control and more predictability.

When should I add AI follow-up questions to my study block?

Follow-ups can be added to all blocks in the study builder. For more information on each block type check out this guide.

Add follow-ups when you want to gather more information about your participant's response than you think you would get from just your initial question. Some typical use cases are:

  • Explore blocks - if you're asking participants to a question about their experiences, it's sometimes happens that they provide a general high-level answer. AI generated follow-up questions allow you to ask clarifying questions that give you more information.

  • Rate or Choose blocks - when asking a rating or multi-choice question it's often helpful to understand why your participant gave the answer they gave. Adding an AI generated follow-up question here will allow you to automatically dig deeper and find out why they gave the answer they gave.

  • Show blocks - when asking participants to review a design it's often helpful to start with an open ended question to gather their unguided feedback. Then you can use AI generated follow-up questions to dig deeper. You can use Follow-up focus areas in your follow-up questions to guide the participant to share feedback on specific areas that you're interested in learning more about.

Previewing your AI generated follow-up questions

To make sure that follow-up questions get asked in the way you want, you can preview how your study will appear to your participants in the Questions preview on the right-hand side of the study builder, or using the Preview button in the top-right corner:
